More Meeting For Your Money
Planners will find it easy to capitalize on the more tangible financial attractions of modern-day Mexico, namely its location as a Latin American gateway, affordable resources, and increasingly competitive open market conditions. The mere mention of Mexico means business and opportunities and it has become a synonym for success in the global economy.
There's an added bonus: Mexico's status as a favored tax country much like Canada's allows for even greater value for your meeting dollar. "Meetings and seminars are all completely deductible, as are incentive programs as long as it is proven business expense," says Guillermo Ohem coordinator of the Mexico tourism board. "There is no limit to the amount of trips that can qualify for these deductions."
Big, bold, beautiful and right next door, Mexico is just what planners are looking for in a travel reward destination. If location means everything, then this is it: a shared border with the American southwest and major international airports in the hottest destinations mean travel is not only short, but comfortable and hassle-free. And, here, even the smallest towns have a developed tourism infrastructure, so hotels are easy to find, book and enjoy from unique restored haciendas and downtown colonial mansions to sprawling, ultra-modern beach resorts to everything in between, all with impeccable service. The hardest part of planning incentive travel to Mexico is deciding where to go and what to do. Different destinations appeal to different tastes. In the northern reaches of the Republic, for example, you'll find the fabulous Copper Canyon, an adventure unlike any other.
Beaches? Mexico has two coasts to boast: the lengthy Pacific side, full of resort towns and fabulous beaches, and the Caribbean side, home to Cancún, Cozumel and the Mayan Riviera. History buffs can follow the Colonial Route through the central region of Mexico, stopping at towns such as Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Querétaro, where Spanish Baroque architecture begs to be photographed. Ecotourists need look no farther than the Yucatán peninsula, the gulf state of Veracruz, Baja California or Vallarta just to name a few spots where nature can still be enjoyed at its pristine best.
Meeting Incentive Experts has been working in Mexico for over 20 years, providing simply the best meeting-incentive programs. We have the connections and the resources to make sure your attendees truly enjoy this marvelous destination.
There have been many questions and misconceptions, so we would like to share with you what we know, some tips on how to make the process more manageable and bring to light some of the ins and outs of this new law. As of January 1, 2004, foreign meetings that are operated in the country of Mexico are exempt of VAT (Value Added Tax).
What is defined as a meeting in order to qualify for the VAT exemption? A Meeting is defined by the Mexican government in article 29 (VII) of the VAT law as one of the following:
Is Incentive travel and Award trips exempt from VAT? At this time, Incentive group and Award trips are NOT exempt from VAT. There have been discussions about the government considering extending this promotion to incentive and award programs, although nothing has been confirmed, so the exemption is only valid for Meetings as defined above.
What is required to obtain 0% VAT? In order to qualify for the exemption, your event must be coordinated and paid for by a foreign Event Organizer located outside of Mexico. In addition, the government requires copies of the following documents from all group participants:
How can obtaining the required documents be made easy? Hotel and DMC staff are happy to assist our clients with obtaining these documents from participants upon arrival. We are not however responsible for insuring that all documents are handed in, or the costs of supplying copy machines, this is the clients responsibility. In our experiences, it is better to make copies of documents upon check-in to the hotel. As your participants will need these documents to leave the country, we understand how important it is to them that they are not misplaced, so the best way is while they are checking in at the hotel to have copy machines available to make the respective copies. Most programs will have a pre-registered group check-in area assigned to them, so this just takes a few seconds more of their time and their documents are returned to them immediately. If you have not considered a group check-in area for your program and are planning on taking advantage of the 0% VAT, we highly recommend you program one with your hotel in order to make this process easier and less time consuming.
